Results 2011/12 The finals of the 49th Ipswich and District Badminton League (IDBL) Championships were played at Northgate Sports Centre with the finals of the veterans’ tournaments also being played at the same time. Pride of place goes to Dan Moss (YMCA), who won a hat-trick of titles. He led the way, as eight players made their finals night debuts and some emerged as title winners. The first match provided the most competitive encounter of the evening when last year’s runner up in the ladies singles, Emma Lee (Abbeygate), took on the challenge of Jo Tumilty (Ipswich). The match was evenly poised at one game all, but Lee pulled away in the later stages of the third game, winning 21-17 to win the trophy for the first time. Moss won the first of his titles in the men’s singles, where he defeated Gavin Coyne (YMCA). 15 year old Coyne battled hard but could not prevent his more experienced opponent from winning in two games. In an all YMCA men’s doubles final, Moss, partnered by David Poole came out on top winning 21-12, 22-20 to foil Paul Adderson and Miguel Soler’s attempt to win an eighth title in this event. With two pairs making their first appearance in the ladies doubles final, new winners were guaranteed. Linzi Chatfield and Mandy Davies from the Coastal Wanderers club came out on top, beating the YMCA pair of Suzanne Howes and Jo Poole by a comfortable margin. The remarkable run of success for the YMCA pairing of Sue Poole and Soler, who had won the mixed doubles for the last nine seasons, finally came to an end in the last contest of the evening. They were beaten 21-18, 21-14 by Moss, completing his hat-trick of victories, and Amanda Newcombe (Stowmarket). Results Summary: Men’s Singles: Dan Moss beat Gavin Coyne 21-8, 21-16. The final of the Ipswich and District Badminton League Team Championships, for the Playford Trophy was played at Suffolk New College Sports Centre. For the first time in the 42 year history of the event, there was no outright winner and the trophy will be shared between the two teams, Felixstowe and Kesgrave, who both scored 317 points. Kesgrave gained victories over Abbeygate, Gainsborough and Woodbridge to reach the final, with Felixstowe defeating Framlingham, who were last year’s runners-up, Battledores and Corinthians. In an evening of closely contested badminton, there was little to choose between the two teams. Felixstowe had a nine point lead, going into the last match, but Paul McEvoy and Dan West of Kesgrave clawed back the deficit to leave honours even at 317 points each. The match concluded a successful season for the two clubs with both having two of their sides promoted. The teams were: FELIXSTOWE: Katy Benns, Lucy Hornett, Ali Oxburrow, Mike Attwood, Andrew Cleveland and Sean Hastings. KESGRAVE: Imogen Day, Sam Day, Jessie Eustace, Ryan Leggett, Paul McEvoy and Dan West. The story of this years Tournament.....
