Championships and Veterans The 52nd Ipswich and District Badminton League Championships took place at Suffolk One where David Poole (YMCA) was the most successful player, featuring in three finals and picking up two titles. Dan Moss (YMCA) and Poole won their respective groups to reach the final of the men’s singles where they met for the third consecutive year. With honours even after two games, Moss took the title for the fourth year running, winning the third game of a physically demanding contest, 21-15. The ladies doubles title went to the Stowmarket club, as in the previous year, where Kari Sherington, last year’s winner, triumphed with Amanda Newcombe in a round-robin event (Pictured Left). Their success included a 21-16, 21-16 victory against the Meridians pairing, Natalie Collins & Anna Godbold, who finished as runners-up. Moss and Poole were in opposition for a second time with Moss and Jorge Reis (Corinthians) taking on Poole and Luke Hill (YMCA in the men’s doubles final. Unfortunately there was an early end to this match when an injury to Moss resulted in Moss and Reis conceding at 12-19 down in the first game. The mixed doubles final went to a third game with Susan Poole (YMCA) lifting the trophy for the nineteenth time when she won the decider 21-10 with partner David Poole, against Godbold and Tim Scott (YMCA). Results Summary: Men’s Singles: Final - Dan Moss beat David Poole 21-16, 17-21, 21-15. Ladies Doubles: Winners - Amanda Newcombe & Kari Sherrington, Runners-up - Natalie Collins & Anna Godbold. Men’s Doubles: Final - Luke Hill & David Poole beat Dan Moss & Jorge Reis 19-12 (conceded). Mixed Doubles: Final - Susan Poole & David Poole beat Anna Godbold & Tim Scott 21-14, 15-21, 21-10. Veterans’ Winners: Men’s Singles: Sandy Taylor (Abbeygate) Men’s Doubles: Peter Bell (Abbeygate) & Mike Tee (YMCA) Ladies Doubles: Sarah Gooding & Susan Poole (YMCA)
The final of the Ipswich and District Badminton League Team Championships for the Playford Trophy was played at Northgate Sports Centre with Thorpeness, last year’s winners, taking on the challenge of Skillcentre who were competing in the final tie for the first time. Skillcentre reached the final with victories over Meridians, DVE and Felixstowe. Thorpeness defeated Framlingham, East Bergholt and Kesgrave in the earlier rounds of the competition. Thorpeness retained the trophy with a winning margin of 116 points, defeating Skillcentre by 367 to 251 points. Megan Clark was their most successful player finishing the evening undefeated in her six games. Both clubs have enjoyed league success this season, with their mixed teams gaining promotion from their respective divisions. The teams were: THORPENESS:
