Championships and VeteransThe 53rd Ipswich and District Badminton League Championships were held at Suffolk One where Tim Scott (YMCA) featured prominently with three titles to his name. A number of young players who have previously been successful in the League’s Under 18 event continued their development with good performances in the senior championships. Anna Godbold (Meridians) partnered by Scott, and the Meridians pair of Patricia Kou and Matt Healey, emerged undefeated to win their respective groups in the mixed doubles. In the final, Godbold and Scott, who were runners up last year, came out on top winning 23-21, 21-16. In a round-robin men’s singles event, Scott and Healey met in their opening match. In a closely fought encounter, Scott came out on top with a 21-18, 21-19 victory and this result proved to be crucial, as both players went on to win their remaining matches to leave Scott as champion with Healey as runner-up. Seventeen year-old Kou, the Under 18 girls’ singles champion, took the ladies singles crown. She lost the first game of her final against Emma Lee (Abbeygate) but won the next two to complete an 11-21, 21-18, 21-12 victory. For the second year running, the ladies doubles was won by Amanda Newcombe and Kari Sherington of the Stowmarket club. They won three of their four matches in a round-robin event, but lost 19-21, 19-21 to the Abbeygate pairing of Emma Lee and Lisa Lee, who finished as runners up with two wins and two defeats from their four matches. In the men’s doubles, Scott and Gavin Coyne (YMCA) were the winners of Group A, and the Stowmarket pair of Stephen Hall and Stephen Lambert came out on top in Group B. Scott and Coyne took the title with a 21-14, 21-14 victory in the final. Results Summary: Mixed Doubles: Final - Anna Godbold & Tim Scott beat Patricia Kou & Matt Healey 23-21, 21-16. FINAL 28th April 7pm at Northgate Sports Centre The final of the Ipswich and District Badminton League Team Championships for the Playford Trophy took place at Northgate Sports Centre where Meridians, who had previously lifted the trophy three times between 1996 and 1998, took on the challenge of Woodbridge. Woodbridge’s route to the final was achieved with victories over Glevering, Felixstowe and Framlingham. Meridians had a narrow semi-final victory over DVE, having defeated Meadlands and YMCA in the earlier rounds. The event is handicapped, based on league positions, and Woodbridge (+38) began with an advantage over Meridians (scratch). After the completion of the first two matches, Meridians had overturned the deficit to lead by ten points, and by the end of the evening had pulled further ahead to win the event by 375 points to 265 points. Victory for Meridians was the finale to a very successful season in which four of their teams - two men’s, one mixed and one ladies, finished top of their respective divisions.
