Northgate Sports Centre was the venue for the Ipswich and District Badminton League Junior Championships for the Under 15 age group, sponsored by Badminton Base. Player of the day was Hannah Robertshaw (Abbeygate) who captured three titles with victory in the singles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles. Jonathan Kuribayashi-Coleman (Meridians) was also successful, winning two events.

In the boys’ singles, Kuribayashi-Coleman made comfortable progress to the final including a semi-final win against Matthew Cross (Corinthians). In the bottom half of the draw Alex Hunt (Abbeygate) advanced, including two hard fought matches which required a deciding third game, against Paddy Miller (YMCA), and against Levi Hoang (YMCA) in the semi-final. Kuribayashi-Coleman took the title, beating Hunt, 21-15, 21-12, in the final.

The first match losers entered a plate competition and Fionn O’Reilly (Thorpeness) won his 3 matches to emerge as the winner, defeating Tommy Hunt (Abbeygate), in the final.

Robertshaw and Rebecca Easy (YMCA) halved their match in a round-robin girls’ singles competition, but Robertshaw won the event by winning her other matches, with Easy finishing as the runner-up.

The boys’ doubles competition saw some new entrants, playing competitive badminton together for the first time and their energy and enthusiasm could not be faulted. Three pairs dominated the event, each winning six of their seven games and total points scored decided the outcome of the final positions. Alex Hunt and Kuribayashi-Coleman won the event with 145 points, despite losing their last game, 21-19, to Cross and Hoang, who were runners-up for the second year running, with 143 points. O’Reilly and Miller had played well, but just missed out and had to settle for third place scoring 141 points.

The Abbeygate pairing of Robertshaw and Georgia Carr were the victors in the girls doubles. Easy and Mathilda Barnard (Woodbridge), who were defeated 21-11, 21-10 by Robertshaw and Carr, were the runners-up.

Robertshaw completed her hat-trick of victories, by winning the mixed doubles, partnered by Cross. They won all their games, including the 21-17 defeat of Carr and Matthew Osborne (Abbeygate), who finished as runners-up.

Boys’ Singles: Semi-finals – J Kuribayashi-Coleman beat M Cross 21-10 21-16. A Hunt beat L Hoang 21-16, 19-21, 21-15, Final: J Kuribayashi-Coleman beat A Hunt 21-15, 21-12.

Girls’ Singles: Winner – H Robertshaw, Runner-up – R Easy.

Boys’ Doubles: WinnersA Hunt & J Kuribayashi-Coleman, Runners-up - M Cross & L Hoang.

Girls Doubles: Winners – G Carr & H Robertshaw, Runners-up – M Barnard & R Easy.

The Ipswich and District Badminton League Championships for the Under 18 age group, sponsored by Badminton Base, were held at Northgate Sports Centre. Katie Clark (Thorpeness) captured two doubles titles on a day when the spoils were shared between seven players from six different clubs.

The boys’ singles were split into two groups, with Gavin Coyne (YMCA) reaching the final from Group A, following two straightforward victories. In Group B, all matches went to a third game with Jonathan Kuribayashi-Coleman (Meridians), emerging on top, after hard fought victories over Jack Gray (Stowmarket) and Michael Edwards (Abbeygate). The final produced some enterprising badminton from both players, with Kuribayashi-Coleman, the youngest competitor in the event, displaying maturity beyond his years, taking the first game. Honours were even at 12-all in the second game, before Coyne forged ahead and won 21-13. Kuribayashi-Coleman took an early lead in the deciding game, but Coyne fought back to take the title in an event where he had finished as runner-up last year.

Imogen Day (Kesgrave), was the winner of the girls’ singles.  In her match against Anna Godbold (Meridians), who was runner-up, Day, overcame the loss of the first game, before securing victory 19-21, 21-6, 21-19.

Kuribayashi-Coleman teamed up with Edwards to lift the boys’ doubles trophy. Coyne and Gray were the runners-up, narrowly losing 22-20, in the deciding game of their marathon contest with Kuribayashi-Coleman and Edwards.

Katie Clark won the first of her two titles, when she partnered Ashleigh Gormer (Belstead), in the girls’ doubles, with Day and Anna Godbold finishing as runners-up.

In the mixed doubles, Clark, and her Thorpeness club-mate, George Godbold, won all their matches to secure victory. Megan Clark (Thorpeness) partnered by Gray, and Anna Godbold partnered by Coyne, both won three of their six games, but it was Godbold and Coyne who took the runners-up position, with a higher points scored total.

Boys’ Singles: Final: G Coyne beat J Kuribayashi-Coleman 14-21, 21-13, 21-16.

Girls’ Singles: Winner – I Day, Runner-up – A Godbold

Boys’ Doubles: Winners – J Kuribayashi-Coleman & M Edwards, Runners-up – G Coyne & J Gray.

Girls Doubles: Winners – K Clark & A Gormer, Runners-up – I Day & A Godbold.

Mixed Doubles: Winners – K Clark & G Godbold, Runners-up - A Godbold & G Coyne.
