The Ipswich and District Badminton League Junior Championships for the Under 15 age group took place at Northgate Sports Centre where two titles were captured by both Kayleigh Williams and Robert Wing. A number of very young players entered for the first time and are to be congratulated on their battling performances with some enjoying success against older opponents.
The boys’ singles was played in four groups, the group winners progressing to the semi-finals where Daniel Sillett (Abbeygate) beat Oliver Permain (Stowmarket) and Robert Wing (Stowmarket) was the victor against Lucas Campbell-Robson (YMCA). The final was closely contested with Wing gaining an early lead in the first game and just staying ahead to take it 21-17. Sillett was two points away from levelling the contest in the second, but Wing won the last three points to win 21-19 and take the title.
Sillett with his Abbeygate partner, Laurence Chappel, and the Stowmarket pairing of Wing and Permain were group winners in the boys’ doubles and met in the final. This was another even contest with Sillett and Chappel taking the first game 21-16 and twice having match point in the second before losing 24-26. Wing and Permain won the third game 21-18 to win the event leaving Sillett and Chappel as runners-up for the second year running.
Grace Chester (YMCA) and Rachel Thompson (Felixstowe) both won their first four games in a round-robin girls’ singles competition and met in their last encounter where Chester came out on top 21-19 to retain her title. Catherine Westland (YMCA) won three of her games to finish in third place.
Thompson partnered Kayleigh Williams (YMCA) to take the girls’ doubles trophy. In their match against Chester and Charlotte Xia (Woodbridge), who finished as runners-up, they came out on top 21-11, 21-12.
The day concluded with the mixed doubles, at the end of which no pair was undefeated. Williams and Rylee Hoang (YMCA) were the overall winners and their success included a 15-12, 15-12 victory over Thompson and William Knight (YMCA), who were runners-up.

Boys’ Singles: Semi-finals – D Sillett beat O Pearmain 21-15, 21-19, R Wing beat L Campbell-Robson 21-14, 21-8. Final: R Wing beat D Sillett 21-17, 21-19.
Girls’ Singles: Winner - G Chester, Runner-up – R Thompson.
Boys’ Doubles: Final – O Pearmain & R Wing beat L Chappel & D Sillett 16-21, 26-24, 21-18.
Girls Doubles: Winners – R Thompson & K Williams, Runners-up - G Chester & C Xia.
Mixed Doubles: Winners – K Williams & R Hoang, Runners-up - R Thompson & W Knight.
U18 Championships

There was triple success for two players at the Ipswich and District Badminton League Under-18 Championships which were held at Northgate Sports Centre. Patricia Kou (Meridians) and Ben Bennett-Day (Stowmarket) both won three events and for Kou it was the second year running that she finished the day undefeated.
Kou’s first success was the girls singles where she won a round-robin event which included a 21-8, 21-2 win against runner-up, Anna Keeble (YMCA). Kou and her Meridians team-mate, Teresa Chung then took the girls’ doubles title with victory over Tilly Barnard and Beth Scahill (Woodbridge), 21-6, 21-10.
Bennett-Day was the victor of the boys’ singles with Rylee Hoang (YMCA), who was defeated 14-21, 13-21 by Bennett-Day finishing as runner-up. Bennett-Day’s winning run continued as he partnered Craig Newcombe (Stowmarket) to lift the boys’ doubles trophy, with Lucas Campbell-Robson and Matthew Cook (YMCA) in second place.
Kou and Bennett-Day joined forces to complete their treble with success in the mixed doubles event. In their match against Chung and Newcombe, who were runners-up, they came out on top, 21-14, 21-9.
