JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Under 15's -
The Ipswich and District Badminton League Junior Championships, for the Under 15 age group, were held at Northgate Sports Centre where two YMCA players, Kayleigh Williams and Daniel Cook both captured three titles.
The boys’ singles was played in two groups with the winners and runners-up qualifying for the semi-finals where Daniel Cook defeated Henry Clark (Glevering) and Harry Cuzner (YMCA) beat Lewis Rose (Woodbridge). Cook came out on top, 21-7, 21-14 in the final, to win the event in which he had been the runner-up last year.
The girls’ singles was played in two groups with Williams and Georgina Sait (Abbeygate) emerging undefeated to take their place in the final. Williams retained her title with a 21-16, 21-11 victory.
The other events were played in a round-robin format. Cook and Bob Ward (YMCA), who had to settle for second place last year, were this year’s winners. They won all their matches including a 15-9, 15-8 victory over the runners-up, Henry Clark and Adam Turner (Glevering).
The girls doubles was decided in the final game when the two unbeaten pairs, Sait and Williams and Connie Adderson (Stowmarket) partnered by Eva Boggis (Abbeygate), met. Sait and Williams came out on top, winning 21-9.
Williams and Cook completed their successful day by teaming up to win the final event, the mixed doubles. Adderson and Ward, lost 11-21 to Williams and Cook, but won their other four games to take second place.
Results Summary:
Boys’ Singles: Semi-finals: – D Cook beat H Clark 21-3, H Cuzner beat L Rose 21-15. Final: D Cook beat H Cuzner 21-7, 21-14.
Girls’ Singles: Final: - K Williams beat G Sait 21-16, 21-11.
Boys’ Doubles: Winners: – D Cook & B Ward, Runners-up – H Clark & A Turner.
Girls Doubles: Winners: – G Sait & K Williams, Runners-up – C Adderson & E Boggis.
Mixed Doubles: Winners: – K Williams & D Cook, Runners-up – C Adderson & B Ward.
Under 18's -
The Ipswich and District Badminton League Under-18 Championships took place at Whitton Sports Centre where Kayleigh Williams (YMCA) and Georgina Sait (Abbeygate) both won two events.
In the boys’ singles Ben Evans won all his matches in Group A to progress to the final. The outcome of Group B was decided in the last match when Dan Cook (YMCA) overcame Max Adderson (Stowmarket) in an entertaining encounter with a narrow 21-17, 15-21, 21-18 victory. In the final the power and strength of Evans was too much for his younger opponent and Evans came out on top, 21- 4, 21-3.
In the first match of the girls’ singles Kayleigh Williams beat Georgina Sait 21-14, 21-14. This victory proved pivotal in deciding the final outcome, with both girls winning their remaining matches. Williams therefore completed a singles double having previously won the Under-15 event. Sait and Williams then joined forces to take the girls’ double title with Grace Chester (Woodbridge) and Emily King (Glevering) finishing as runners-up.
The Stowmarket pairing of Peter Fear and Ben Green won the boys’ doubles event winning all their matches, including a 15-14, 8-15, 15-14 victory over Adderson and Cook, who were the runners-up.
The day concluded with the mixed doubles which was won by Sait and Adderson. Chester and Evans were defeated 21-18, 16-21, 15-21 by Sait and Adderson but won their other matches to finish as runners-up.
